Cookies Of Some Sort Have Been Around Forever

Baking cookies has a long history that goes way back before the first oven was ever used. Although the history is lengthy, it can be difficult to decipher exactly where and how cookies came into existence. Cookies do contain many of the same ingredients as traditional cake, such as flour, sugar, baking powder, butter, vanilla, baking soda, and baking powder. These basic ingredients have however been used over time in a variety of ways to create many different flavors of baked cookies, as well as different textures.

Sugar cookies are the favored recipe for Christmas.  They are easy to make and can be decorated in a wide variety of ways.  After baking, the top of the cookies would be decorated with red or green icing to resemble that of a Christmas tree. In the early days of the United States, the traditions of decorating the top of the cookies with icing came from the Dutch. Today the tradition continues and not only sugar cookies are decorated.

Then Came The Chocolate Chip Cookie

One of the most famous cookie recipes of all time was created by both an American in the early 1900. A restaurant wanted a dessert that their clients could take with them and decided to experiment with cookies. They worked with a recipe that was rich and chewy, then added chocolate chips to form what we know today as the classic chocolate chip cookie. This recipe was also to incorporate both white and brown sugars. Chocolate chip cookies were so popular that they were sent across America by mail order to every corner of the country.  Nestles worked with the restaurant owner and soon the recipe was printed on the back of their chocolate chip cookie bags.  Today, it is the most popular cookie in the United States, with Oreos a distant second.

Cookie SheetsCookies Don’t Require A Lot Of Kitchen Tools

One of the nice things about baking cookies is that you don’t have to use a lot of kitchen tools to create some tasty treats.  A stand mixer, baking sheets, a bowl and measuring cups are all you need.  Mixing the batter is usually a simple matter of adding wet ingredients to dry, then placing a ball of dough on the baking sheet.  Cookies bake quickly and within 30 minutes from start to finish you have a true dessert delight.
